Senior Living Guidance for Families

You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone

A message to families from the founder of Integrity Senior Living Advisors

“We can’t keep doing this on our own.”

I hear words like these from families every day.

Senior living decisions often happen during a crisis: after a fall, hospitalization, caregiver burnout, a diagnosis, the death of a spouse, or when a parent can no longer safely live alone.

In these moments, families are often expected to make important decisions quickly while trying to understand care needs, costs, availability, and which communities may actually be able to meet their loved one’s needs.

What Families Don’t Always Know About Senior Living

A beautiful community is not necessarily the right fit for your loved one. A community may look wonderful online, but that does not mean it can provide the care your parent needs today or the higher level of care they may need in the future.

Pricing can be complicated.Monthly rates, care charges, add-ons, and fee structures can differ from one community to another.
Care levels vary. Two communities with similar prices may provide very different levels of support.
Memory care is not the same everywhere.Programs, staffing, training, and the type of support offered can differ significantly.
Licensing and staffing matter. They should be part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
Availability can change quickly. The best fit on paper may not have an opening when a family needs it.
Online appearance is only one piece.A beautiful building still has to be able to meet the senior’s actual needs.

This is where a senior living advisor or placement agency can be helpful.

Many families do not realize how much time can go into researching communities, gathering information, comparing options, and helping a family navigate this process. For families who work with a referral-based senior living advisor, this guidance is often provided at no cost to the family. The advisor is typically compensated by the community if the family chooses to move there.

A Senior Living Advisor Can Help Families

  • Understand a loved one’s care needs
  • Identify appropriate senior living options
  • Check current complaints when available
  • Research availability and pricing
  • Compare communities and care options
  • Arrange and attend community tours
  • Help families prepare questions to ask
  • Navigate difficult decisions
  • Advocate for the senior and family
If this were my mother, father, spouse, or someone I loved, I would want to know more than how beautiful the building is.

The Questions That Matter

  • Who will be caring for them?
  • Can the community meet their changing needs?
  • What happens when their care needs increase?
  • What will the true monthly cost be?
  • Will the community be able to support them if their needs change?
  • Do the people caring for them treat residents with dignity and respect?

A Personal Message from Theresa

I began working in the senior care industry with an in-home care agency while caring for my mother in my home many years ago. Before that, I had mainly helped other older family members and friends. I did not know much at the time, but my personal experiences taught me a great deal about what families go through when caring for someone they love.

I also leaned on my experience in life coaching and, just as importantly, on people who knew more than I did. I was always willing to learn so I could better understand how to help families in their own unique situations.

Over time, I gathered resources and connections that could help families remain at home longer whenever possible. When a move became necessary, I helped connect families with placement resources and senior living options.

After years of learning, listening, and gaining experience, I created Integrity Senior Living Advisors. I then hired and trained other amazing advisors so that we could help more families navigate the transition into senior living or higher levels of care.

Early on, I learned that many families try to navigate this process on their own.

A hospital social worker or doctor may say, “You need to find memory care or assisted living,” or “Your mom can’t live alone anymore and needs more care.”

As caregivers at heart, we often take those words literally. We jump in, start making phone calls, sending emails, researching online, and trying to figure everything out ourselves, often while we are already overwhelmed emotionally.

Every day, I hear from families who are in this exact situation. Some have already moved their mom or dad and later realize that the decision may not have been the right fit for their loved one or their family.
